Vision & Beliefs

Mission
Our mission is to make followers of Christ and guide them to be a community of faithful and fruitful servants for the Kingdom of God.

Who We Are

Church of the Living Christ has a story worth telling.  There were twelve families in the seventies that sensed God asking them to start a new church.  Their vision was a church that worshiped in contemporary ways. They devoted twenty percent of their offerings to being a missional presence in their community and seeing Jesus change lives around the world.  This is the DNA of Church of the Living Christ.

The story is still being written today.

We worship together.  We value contemporary expressions of worship in our two worship gatherings.

We serve together.  We devote twenty percent of our offerings to providing a food pantry, mentors in our local elementary schools, audio bibles in India, and mission experiences for young people and adults.  We relieve the poor and oppressed.

We grow together.  From our youngest children to our oldest adult, we believe that God wants us to be growing spiritually.  Our GroupLife ministry exists to create an environment for deep friendship, spiritual growth and service to our neighbors.  Lives change through the community that develops in GroupLife.

We care for one another. We celebrate each other’s lives.  We visit the sick and hurting.  We support those who are grieving. We welcome guests and would like to meet you.

Our Roots

Church of the Living Christ is a member of The Reformed Church in America, which is the oldest continuing denomination in America.  We accept the Bible as the inspired Word of God.  Scripture tells God’s redemptive story- how God draws humanity into a loving relationship through Jesus Christ.  Christians are empowered by the Holy Spirit to spread the message of salvation to the entire world.

Learn what we believe, as members of The Reformed Church in America (RCA).  Church of the Living Christ is in the family of churches that broadly identify themselves as “The Reformed Tradition.”  We affirm three creeds that arose in the early church, the Apostles’ Creed, the Athanasian Creed, and the Nicene Creed.  The RCA is a confessional denomination. Our reformation history includes an affirmation of the Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession, and the Canons of Dort.

Brief Congregational History
Church of the Living Christ began with sixteen families on March 12, 1972 as a church plant from FIrst Reformed Church of Fremont, MI.  The early worshipers began meeting at Daisy Brook Elementary School in Fremont and officially on October 19, 1972.  The early members stepped out in faith and began construction on the first phase of their current building in 1978. Celebrating God’s faithfulness, the CLC worshipers joined for their first worship service in their new building on November 19, 1978.  After ten more years of growth, a second phase was dedicated on November 13, 1988.

Church of the Living Christ has had five installed pastors since 1973.  Dale Matthews served from 1973-1979, Jon Mark Schoon from 1980-1990, and Lee Ausema from 1993-2001. Barbara Boss served the church as the Christian Education Director and as an Associate in Ministry from 1992-2003.  Andrea and Nathan DeWard have served as Co-Pastors since July of 2003.
